What an Orthodontist Does

Upper Bucks Orthodontics

You may wonder how an orthodontist differs from a general dentist. Simply put, an orthodontist helps to correct bite problems that may be caused by issues such as crowded teeth, crooked teeth, teeth spaced too far apart, extra teeth, missing teeth, or a jaw that is out of alignment. These bite problems are called “malocclusions,” and they may be genetic or caused by loss of baby teeth at an early or late age, trauma, thumb sucking, or other issues.

Unlike general dentists, orthodontists are trained to deal specifically with these issues, and they receive two to three years of extra training in an orthodontic residency program. Some, such as Dr. Robert A. Azarik of Upper Bucks Orthodontics, are also board certified in orthodontics.

Orthodontists help improve bite problems through the use of dental appliances, such as braces and aligners, and they often use retainers to help maintain a proper bite once it has been corrected.

First, an orthodontist will evaluate your teeth to find the treatment that will work best for you by using X-rays to look more closely at your teeth, gums, and jaw. At Upper Bucks Orthodontics, we use digital X-rays for a safer and more accurate picture. An orthodontist will also create digital photographs and a model of your teeth. This will allow him to better analyze tooth size and position and the bite.

After an orthodontist finishes your evaluation, it’s time for a discussion of your treatment plan, including the right type of braces or other dental appliance for you and how long your treatment may last.

Once your treatment begins, your orthodontist will monitor you periodically to ensure your orthodontic treatment is progressing smoothly and to make adjustments as needed. At Upper Bucks Orthodontics, Dr. Azarik does all fittings and adjustments of appliances himself, ensuring very personalized care.

Though traditionally children or teenagers have received the majority of orthodontic treatment, more and more adults are also seeking orthodontics to improve their bite and achieve a more beautiful smile.
